UCSC # Toxic Algal Bloom Interference # Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are increasing in prevalence due to warming temperatures; this threatens the utility and biodiversity of freshwater ecosystems globally. The cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa secretes microcystin, a hepatotoxin that is the principal contributor to this threat. Remediation of HABs can be accomplished with synthetic biology, but efficiently transforming M. aeruginosa is difficult due to targeting of foreign DNA by restriction-modification systems. ...
